Dominica, the Nature Island

A boiling lake, a gorge you swim up, resident sperm whales, and almost no beach at all.

Dominica is the Caribbean island for people who don't want a beach. It's volcanic, mountainous and almost entirely green, 365 rivers, a lake that actually boils, and the only country in the world with a resident population of sperm whales. Six days, one base, and a lot of walking.

What you get

The whole trip, decided.

Not a list of sights. A route someone has already walked, with the bookings that need doing early flagged, the transfers timed, and the costs written as real ranges instead of a fantasy number.

Why this one

Worth the flight.

  • The Boiling Lake, a full day's hike through the Valley of Desolation to a flooded fumarole
  • Titou Gorge, a narrow volcanic slot canyon you swim up to a waterfall
  • Champagne Reef, where volcanic gas bubbles up through the sand as you snorkel
  • Sperm whales, which live in these waters year-round rather than passing through
  • The Kalinago Territory, home of the last organised Carib community in the Caribbean

Best months are December, January, February, March, April, May. Expect around $1,300–2,400 per person, excluding flights for the whole 6 days, excluding flights. The guide breaks that into stay, food, activities and transport so you can see where it goes.

How this stays honest

Checked August 2026

Prices, opening days and entry rules drift, and no written guide can outrun that. So costs are always ranges rather than quotes, every plan carries the date it was last checked, and the last page is six things to confirm yourself before you book anything.

I take no commission from any hotel or operator. You book everything yourself, in your own name, at the price you can see.
