The Dominican Republic, Beyond the Resort
The oldest city in the Americas, the wildest beaches in the country, and a few days of doing nothing.

Almost everyone lands in Punta Cana and never leaves the gate. This week uses the country properly: two nights in Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial, where Europe first landed in the Americas, three on the Samaná peninsula where the beaches are genuinely wild, and two at the end doing absolutely nothing.
What you get
The whole trip, decided.
Not a list of sights. A route someone has already walked, with the bookings that need doing early flagged, the transfers timed, and the costs written as real ranges instead of a fantasy number.

Why this one
Worth the flight.
- The Zona Colonial after dark, when the tour groups leave and the plazas fill with locals
- Playa Rincón, regularly called one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, and still nearly empty
- El Limón waterfall, reached on horseback through the hills
- Humpback whales in Samaná Bay, if you come between mid-January and March
- Real Dominican food. Sancocho, mangú, and a plate of the day that costs less than a coffee at home
Best months are December, January, February, March, April. Expect around $1,150–2,300 per person for the week, excluding flights for the whole 7 days, excluding flights. The guide breaks that into stay, food, activities and transport so you can see where it goes.
How this stays honest
Checked August 2026
Prices, opening days and entry rules drift, and no written guide can outrun that. So costs are always ranges rather than quotes, every plan carries the date it was last checked, and the last page is six things to confirm yourself before you book anything.
I take no commission from any hotel or operator. You book everything yourself, in your own name, at the price you can see.
