Guadeloupe, Both Wings

A butterfly-shaped archipelago, volcano and rainforest on one wing, beaches and sugar cane on the other.

Guadeloupe is shaped like a butterfly and its two wings are completely different islands joined by a bridge. Basse-Terre is mountainous rainforest with an active volcano and the only underwater reserve Jacques Cousteau put his name to. Grande-Terre is flat, dry and where the beaches are. Six days does both, plus a day on Les Saintes.

Why this one

Worth the flight.

  • La Soufrière, an active volcano you can hike to the steaming summit of
  • The Cousteau Reserve at Pigeon Island, still among the Caribbean's best snorkelling
  • Carbet Falls, three waterfalls in dense rainforest
  • Terre-de-Haut in Les Saintes, a village bay often called one of the world's finest
  • Sunday lunch at a Creole table, which in Guadeloupe is a serious commitment

Best months are December, January, February, March, April, May. Expect around $1,250–2,400 per person, excluding flights for the whole 6 days, excluding flights. The guide breaks that into stay, food, activities and transport so you can see where it goes.

How this stays honest

Checked August 2026

Prices, opening days and entry rules drift, and no written guide can outrun that. So costs are always ranges rather than quotes, every plan carries the date it was last checked, and the last page is six things to confirm yourself before you book anything.

I take no commission from any hotel or operator. You book everything yourself, in your own name, at the price you can see.
