Nicaragua, Colonial Cities and Volcanoes

Two rival colonial cities, an island made of two volcanoes, and surf on an empty Pacific coast.

Nicaragua has the best-preserved colonial cities in Central America, an island built from two volcanoes rising out of a freshwater lake, and a Pacific coast where the surf towns are still small. It's also among the cheapest countries in the Americas. Seven days covers Granada, León, Ometepe and the coast.

What you get

The whole trip, decided.

Not a list of sights. A route someone has already walked, with the bookings that need doing early flagged, the transfers timed, and the costs written as real ranges instead of a fantasy number.

Why this one

Worth the flight.

  • Granada's painted streets under Mombacho volcano, and its cathedral in yellow
  • Boarding down the black gravel slope of Cerro Negro, an active volcano
  • Ometepe, two volcanoes joined by an isthmus, in the middle of a lake
  • The lava lake at Masaya, visible glowing from the crater rim after dark
  • Sunset on the Pacific at San Juan del Sur, with dinner for a few dollars

Best months are December, January, February, March, April. Expect around $600–1,300 per person, excluding flights for the whole 7 days, excluding flights. The guide breaks that into stay, food, activities and transport so you can see where it goes.

How this stays honest

Checked August 2026

Prices, opening days and entry rules drift, and no written guide can outrun that. So costs are always ranges rather than quotes, every plan carries the date it was last checked, and the last page is six things to confirm yourself before you book anything.

I take no commission from any hotel or operator. You book everything yourself, in your own name, at the price you can see.
